Washburn mass media students recently joined the Topeka chapter of the American Advertising Federation (Topeka Ad Fed). Topeka Ad Fed is a proud driving force of local professionals that guides, educates, and promotes the evolving, expanding, and impactful voice of the local marketing community through art, strategy, and communication.

Bods in PR, a student organization for Washburn University public relations majors, welcomes new members every year. Public relations students are part of the mass media department at Washburn. As part of the organization's activities, the members of Bods in PR help plan, manage and execute the annual Mass Media Keynote Speaker Event. The 2019 Keynote Speaker Event included more than 120 attendees, student awards and an after-hours networking opportunity for students and alumni.

Four students were awarded physics and astronomy department scholarships to continue their studies at Washburn University in the 2019-2020 school year.

Washburn University students produced five issues of the Mass Media Alumni Newsletter during the 2018-2019 school year. The newsletter is driven and produced primarily by students.

Jaycie Collins was named the 2018-2019 Undergraduate Student Employee of the Year at Washburn University. Collins works at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) as the intramural program assistant, the highest student employment role at the SRWC. "Jaycie is a shining example of the positive impact quality student employment experiences can have," Whitney Slater, director of the SRWC, said. "She has grown exponentially during her tenure at the SRWC, both personally and professionally. She takes her responsibilities seriously while conducting herself in a very approachable manner."

Eighteen Washburn University students received scholarships to continue their studies of philosophy and/or religious studies in the 2019-2020 school year. Students can major or minor in both philosophy and religious studies.

Six Washburn University students were awarded scholarships to continue their studies in communications. These scholarships are from the communications department for the 2019-2020 school year.

Five Washburn University students were awarded engineering scholarships for the 2019-2020 school year. The engineering area of study is housed in the physics and astronomy department.

Kasey Paez presented at the 2019 Apeiron Showcase at Washburn University. Paez's presentation, titled "Trauma and Conflict Resolution in Colombia," discussed her experience studying abroad in Colombia. Apeiron is an annual event that allows students to showcase their research, scholarship, creative activities and community engagement activities.

Several Washburn University students completed the Washburn Transformational Experience in International Experience in spring 2019. The Washburn Transformational Experience (WTE) provides an opportunity for students to enhance their learning through engagement in experiences outside the classroom in one of four arenas: leadership, community service, international experience or scholarly/creative endeavors.

Washburn University student Maria Wellman was awarded the School of Applied Studies Award of Excellence at the School of Applied Studies commencement ceremony on May 11, 2019.

Washburn University students were recognized for their work at the Kansas Society of Radiologic Technologists' Annual Convention in March. The convention took place in Wichita to bring together radiologic technologists and medical imaging professionals in Kansas for education and development. Along with competitions, there were workshops, vendors and speakers. The Kansas Society of Radiologic Technologists is the professional society for radiologic technologists and medical imaging professionals in Kansas. They are an affliate society of the ASRT and serve to advocate for the medical imaging professionals in health policy, education, and advancing modalities.

Washburn University awarded the Fix Scholarship to 14 incoming freshman for the 2019-2020 school year. The Fix Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship awarded by the Washburn University College of Arts and Sciences to incoming high school students who have earned a strong ACT score and have an interest in studying the natural sciences.

High school students in Shawnee county are being honored for their exceptional college coursework. These students took courses through Washburn University while still in high school as part of a concurrent enrollment program (CEP). They made the CEP Dean's List by achieving a GPA of 3.5 or better on those college courses.

Twenty-three Washburn University students were inducted into Phi Alpha, the social work honor society, in spring 2019.

The Ichabod chapter of Mortar Board Senior Honor Society recently initiated 55 Washburn University students. Mortar Board, Inc., is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for their achievements in scholarship, leadership and service.

Lambda Nu, the national honor society for the radiologic and imaging sciences, recently recognized new initiates from Washburn University.

Washburn University's chapter of Alpha Lamda Delta, freshman honor society, initiated its 2019 class of members. The mission of Alpha Lambda Delta is to encourage superior academic achievement among students in their first year in institutions of higher education. Students who receive a 3.5 GPA or higher in their first semester are eligible for membership.

Eleven students were initiated into Nonoso in spring 2019. Nonoso is a women's honorary society at Washburn University comprised of members who exemplify scholarship, leadership, moral integrity and accomplishment. No more than 15 students are chosen each year to join; students are chosen by active Nonoso members.

Washburn University students were recognized and awarded for thier hard work with scholarships to continue their studies.

The Dancing Blues dance team earned the overall Division II National Championship title in the national American Dance/Drill Team competition. They also placed first in both the jazz and hip-hop categories.

The Alpha Mu Omicron chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society inducted five new members this spring. The chapter was founded at Washburn University's School of Applied Studies in 1987. Phi Theta Kappa is the official honor society of two-year colleges, but any institution which confers associate degrees may have a chapter.

Washburn University recently recognized First Year Experience (FYE) Scholars for their commitment to academic excellence. FYE Scholars are students who have earned at least a 3.0 GPA in their first semester of college at Washburn University. The FYE program supports the academic, social and personal transitions of all first-year students to promote success in college.

Washburn University has announced its President's List honorees for the fall 2018 semester. To qualify for the President's List, a student must be enrolled in at least 12 hours of graded credits and earn a semester grade point average of 4.0.
