Thirty-five incoming Washburn University students received the $1,000 Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship. This one-time scholarship is available for transfer students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa, an honor society for two-year colleges.

Three incoming Washburn University were awarded the $3,000 Hindman Scholarship. This scholarship is a renewable scholarship available to select students who graduated from a Rooks County high school.

More than 300 incoming Washburn University students received a freshman academic scholarship. These renewable scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and an ACT composite score of 21 or higher. Scholarship award amounts range from $500 to $5,000 based on academic performance.

Twelve incoming Washburn University students were awarded the Glatt Scholarship for the 2019-2020 school year. The Glatt Scholarship is a $1,000 renewable scholarship available for select students who graduated from a Dickinson County high school.

Washburn University congratulates more than 600 students who qualified for the spring 2019 President's List. To qualify for the President's List, a student must be enrolled in at least 12 hours of graded credits and earn a semester grade point average of 4.0.

Washburn University congratulates more than 850 students who were named to the spring 2019 Dean's List. To qualify for the Dean's List, a student must be enrolled in 12 hours of graded credits and earn a semester grade point average of 3.4 to 3.99.

Incoming Washburn University students have been awarded the Garvey Scholarship for the fall 2019 semester. The Garvey Scholarship is a renewable scholarship worth up to $2000, awarded to students with the highest scores on the Garvey Competitive Exam. The exam is offered several times a year at Washburn University. High school seniors with a GPA of 3.25 or higher, who have previously applied for admittance to Washburn, qualify to take the exam.

The Mary N. Fix Scholarship was awarded to 14 incoming Washburn University students for the fall 2019 semester. The Mary N. Fix Scholarship is a $1,500 renewable scholarship awarded to select high school graduating seniors who are pursuing a degree in biology, chemistry, or physics.

Incoming Washburn University students were awarded the Finnup Scholarship for the 2019 fall semester. The Finnup Scholarship is a $2,000 renewable scholarship awarded to select students who have graduated from a high school in one of the following Kansas counties: Clark, Comanche, Finney, Ford, Grant, Gray, Greeley, Hamilton, Haskell, Hodgeman, Kearny, Lane, Mead, Morton, Ness, Scott, Seward, Stanton, Stevens, or Wichita.

Bethany Wetzel was awarded Washburn University's Bryden Scholarship for the 2019 fall semester. The Bryden Scholarship is a $2,500 renewable scholarship awarded to one Presidential Scholarship recipient. Each Presidential Scholarship recipient has the opportunity to submit an essay and the winning essay writer is awarded the Bryden Scholarship.

Incoming Washburn University student Erica Gilbert was awarded the Woodbury-Ramskill Scholarship for the fall 2019 semester. The Woodbury-Ramskill Scholarship is a $2,000 renewable scholarship awarded to select students who have graduated from a Rush County, Kan., high school.

Two incoming Washburn University students were awarded the Shaw Scholarship for the fall 2019 semester. The Shaw Scholarship is a $1,250 renewable scholarship awarded to select students who are pursuing a degree in pre-law or pre-medicine. To qualify, high school students must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and an ACT score of 28 or higher while transfer students must have a transfer GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Three incoming Washburn University students were awarded the Kansas All-State Scholarship. This scholarship is available for students transferring from community colleges. The Kansas All-State Scholarship is a one-time $1,000 scholarship for transfer students who are named to the All-Kansas Academic team.

Washburn University is pleased to announce the students in its spring 2019 graduating class. More than 700 students completed their courses for associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees. "At Washburn University, we focus on helping each student become their best self," said Dr. Jerry Farley, Washburn University president. "I am confident each of these graduates is prepared for the next step in their life and I am very proud of all the accomplishments represented in this graduating class."

Several Washburn University students volunteered their time and talents at the inaugural WIFI Film Festival in April 2019. More than 90 films were screened at the festival, in addition to several filmmaker interviews and an opening reception. In August 2018, faculty from Washburn's mass media department created an internal organization called the Washburn International Film Institute, or WIFI for short. WIFI is dedicated to promoting and celebrating film production, stories from the Midwest, and education at Washburn University, in the Topeka community, and in the state of Kansas.

Washburn mass media students recently joined the Topeka chapter of the American Advertising Federation (Topeka Ad Fed). Topeka Ad Fed is a proud driving force of local professionals that guides, educates, and promotes the evolving, expanding, and impactful voice of the local marketing community through art, strategy, and communication.

Bods in PR, a student organization for Washburn University public relations majors, welcomes new members every year. Public relations students are part of the mass media department at Washburn. As part of the organization's activities, the members of Bods in PR help plan, manage and execute the annual Mass Media Keynote Speaker Event. The 2019 Keynote Speaker Event included more than 120 attendees, student awards and an after-hours networking opportunity for students and alumni.

Four students were awarded physics and astronomy department scholarships to continue their studies at Washburn University in the 2019-2020 school year.

Washburn University students produced five issues of the Mass Media Alumni Newsletter during the 2018-2019 school year. The newsletter is driven and produced primarily by students.

Jaycie Collins was named the 2018-2019 Undergraduate Student Employee of the Year at Washburn University. Collins works at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC) as the intramural program assistant, the highest student employment role at the SRWC. "Jaycie is a shining example of the positive impact quality student employment experiences can have," Whitney Slater, director of the SRWC, said. "She has grown exponentially during her tenure at the SRWC, both personally and professionally. She takes her responsibilities seriously while conducting herself in a very approachable manner."

Eighteen Washburn University students received scholarships to continue their studies of philosophy and/or religious studies in the 2019-2020 school year. Students can major or minor in both philosophy and religious studies.

Six Washburn University students were awarded scholarships to continue their studies in communications. These scholarships are from the communications department for the 2019-2020 school year.

Five Washburn University students were awarded engineering scholarships for the 2019-2020 school year. The engineering area of study is housed in the physics and astronomy department.

Kasey Paez presented at the 2019 Apeiron Showcase at Washburn University. Paez's presentation, titled "Trauma and Conflict Resolution in Colombia," discussed her experience studying abroad in Colombia. Apeiron is an annual event that allows students to showcase their research, scholarship, creative activities and community engagement activities.

Several Washburn University students completed the Washburn Transformational Experience in International Experience in spring 2019. The Washburn Transformational Experience (WTE) provides an opportunity for students to enhance their learning through engagement in experiences outside the classroom in one of four arenas: leadership, community service, international experience or scholarly/creative endeavors.

Washburn University student Maria Wellman was awarded the School of Applied Studies Award of Excellence at the School of Applied Studies commencement ceremony on May 11, 2019.

Washburn University students were recognized for their work at the Kansas Society of Radiologic Technologists' Annual Convention in March. The convention took place in Wichita to bring together radiologic technologists and medical imaging professionals in Kansas for education and development. Along with competitions, there were workshops, vendors and speakers. The Kansas Society of Radiologic Technologists is the professional society for radiologic technologists and medical imaging professionals in Kansas. They are an affliate society of the ASRT and serve to advocate for the medical imaging professionals in health policy, education, and advancing modalities.

Washburn University awarded the Fix Scholarship to 14 incoming freshman for the 2019-2020 school year. The Fix Scholarship is a prestigious scholarship awarded by the Washburn University College of Arts and Sciences to incoming high school students who have earned a strong ACT score and have an interest in studying the natural sciences.

High school students in Shawnee county are being honored for their exceptional college coursework. These students took courses through Washburn University while still in high school as part of a concurrent enrollment program (CEP). They made the CEP Dean's List by achieving a GPA of 3.5 or better on those college courses.

Twenty-three Washburn University students were inducted into Phi Alpha, the social work honor society, in spring 2019.
